An out-of-network withdrawal is usually charged twice: once by the machine's owner and once by your own bank. On a $40 withdrawal that is a double-digit percentage, which makes it one of the most expensive ways to touch your own money.

What to do instead

  • Check your bank's app for its surcharge-free network before you walk to the nearest machine. The two large networks cover most pharmacies and convenience stores.
  • Cash back at a grocery checkout is free at almost every retailer and works when no machine is nearby.
  • Withdraw larger amounts less often. The fee is per transaction, not per dollar.
