Start with the options that cost nothing, because for food they are real and they are fast.
Where food comes from this week
- A food pantry today. Dial 211 or search your county food bank for the nearest distribution. Most pantries hand out groceries the same visit, and many no longer ask for proof of income. Free. The limit is their hours, so call before you drive.
- SNAP, including online delivery. Apply through your state agency. Benefits land on an EBT card and can be used for online grocery orders at major retailers, so a missing car isn't a blocker. Free. Emergency processing exists in some states for households with almost no income — ask for it by name when you apply.
- School and summer meal programs. Free school breakfast and lunch, plus summer meal sites open to any child in the area, with no application at the door. Free, and it takes a meaningful chunk out of the week's grocery list.
- Neighborhood and faith pantries. Churches, mosques, temples and mutual aid groups often run a small pantry with no paperwork at all. Free, and usually the quickest door to knock on.
- A paycheck advance for the rest. When the pantry opens Thursday and you need food tonight, an advance moves your own pay forward. Cleo lists “Get up to $250* without a credit check, straight from the app.” Earnin lists “Access up to $150/day with a max of $1,000 between paydays. No interest, no credit check. No mandatory fees” and notes “Expedited transfers available for a fee.” Free standard transfer, paid instant transfer.
- An evening of gig work. Delivery and task apps pay out after the shift, and grocery delivery shifts sometimes end with discounted items you can keep. Costs your time and your gas.
Questions people ask
Do I have to prove I'm broke to use a food bank? Most pantries ask for a name and a household size, and many ask nothing at all. There is no credit check and no repayment — it is not a loan.
Can I use SNAP for grocery delivery? Yes, EBT online purchasing works with major grocery retailers in every state. Delivery fees and tips can't be paid with SNAP, so keep a few dollars outside the card.
Is an advance worth it just for groceries? Only for the gap that free help can't cover in time. An advance with no interest is cheaper than overdrafting your account at the register, which costs $35 per fee (B9 internal research, September 2026).
