Speed and price pull in opposite directions here. Every buyer on this page pays less than a patient sale would — what you are buying back is the time you don’t have.
Places that pay the same day
- A marketplace listing with local pickup. Time: hours, if it is priced under the other listings for the same thing and you answer messages fast. Cost: no platform fee, because no payment goes through the platform — it is cash between two people. Write the condition honestly and put “cash, pickup today” in the post.
- Phone and electronics buyback. Kiosks and store trade-in counters quote on the spot and pay immediately. Cost: the quote sits well below what the same phone sells for privately. Back it up, wipe it and turn off activation lock before you go, or the quote drops or is refused.
- Used-goods stores. Clothing resale chains, game and record shops, instrument stores, tool resellers. Time: about an hour, including the sort. Cost: they pay a fraction of their own resale price and reject most of what walks in, so bring more than you expect to sell.
- A pawn shop — two different deals, ask for both. Selling outright ends the transaction. A pawn loan hands you cash and keeps your item as collateral; it costs interest and fees set by your state’s law, and if you don’t repay inside the window, the item is gone. Get the sale offer and the loan terms in writing and compare them before you choose.
- Scrap, returns and deposits. A dead appliance to a scrap metal yard, containers in a bottle-deposit state, unopened purchases still inside the return window with the receipt. Small money, same day, no fee.
- Gift cards you will never use. Exchange kiosks pay on the spot; online buyers pay after they verify the balance. Both pay less than face value, and the discount is the price of turning store credit into cash.
Nothing on this page pays us anything, and that is the point of putting it in front of the borrowing options: a sale has no application, no interest and nothing to repay. Before you let go of something you rely on — a work laptop, the bike you commute on — call the biller first and ask to move the due date. Many will shift it to land after your payday, which is free and sometimes removes the whole problem.
How these sales go wrong
Meet in a public place; many police departments run marked exchange zones for exactly this. Take cash and count it before the item leaves your hands. Ignore anyone who offers more than you asked and wants change back, who sends a payment screenshot instead of a payment, or who wants the item shipped after a “transfer is pending” message. And never read out a code texted to your phone — that is an account takeover, not a purchase.
